Conservation Standard Framing |
| |
All framing completed at Appleton ’s is made by hand to the highest conservation standard meaning items are framed using acid free or acid neutral components. Every mount board we use is acid free to protect the artwork and the backing board is PH balanced to prevent discolouration.
The back of the frame is sealed to prevent foxing and avert moisture penetration. We also offer non reflective and UV glass to further enhance conservation

Oil and Acrylic paintings |

We always stock a large selection of Artist Ready Made Frames in standard sizes from 10” x 8” to 20” x 16” from €38.00 |

Oil on Board or Oil on Canvas
Traditional framing |

Oil on board, oil on canvas, oil on paper or acrylic paintings are generally framed without glass. |

|
Watercolour, Photograph, Sketch and Pastels |
| |

Photograph |
Pastels
Pastels are framed in a similar way to photographs and watercolours where the image is presented in a mount card surround and framed.
We do not recommend framing without a mount card as the image will adhere and smear against the glass. |

Canvases can be stretched over narrow or wide stretcher bars depending on your preference and the finished look you wish to achieve.
Canvas stretching allows the customer to hang the canvas directly on the wall or to frame it in a box style frame or traditional oil on canvas frame.
Items that can be stretched include traditional oil on canvas paintings, batiks and photo canvas prints. |

Box Framing and Float Framing |

Box Frame

|
Box Framing
Box Frames can be made with or without glass depending on the item being framed.
Float Framing
Where there is a requirement to show the textures or edges of an item Float Framing is the option to choose.
Float framing can be done in two ways.
The item is floated on top of a backing card.
or, the item is fixed to a backing and raised above the backing card to give a 3 dimensional effect.
Both ways are very effective when used in conjunction with a box frame.
The hat below is another good example of Box Framing. |

There are many types of glass available for framing.
In Appletons we offer four types.
Clear
Non Reflective
Conservation
Museum
Each type has different properties

Sample
Conservation - Museum
Glass
|
Clear Glass
At 2mm thick, clear glass is lightweight and the most commonly used. |
Conservation Glass
Conservation Glass offers a high UV protection rate (97%) and therefore protects the artwork to a much higher degree than clear or non reflective glass.
If you want to display your valued art in a sun-lit room, you should use a UV blocker glass. |
|
Non Reflective Glass
A slightly defused glass that is used where there is high light reflection that would make the image difficult to see.
The darker an image is the more reflection it can create. When a dark image is glazed with regular glass is can create a ‘mirror” type reflection. Non reflective glass will reduce this in most situations.
Because of its diffusion properties, Non Reflective is not suitable for box framing or canvases where the glass is raised from the framed item.
Non Reflective Glass is generally 15% more expensive than clear glass. |
Museum Glass
Generally used on expensive or highly treasured items.
Museum Glass is the Rolls Royce of glass. While providing the same UV filtering ability as Conservation Glass (97%), it offers a much higher optical level.
At most angles it is virtually invisible and most people are amazed at its unobtrusive presence. |
